The not so happy couple is doomed.
I Give it A Year is an anti-romcom. The ‘happy couple’ really are completely ill-suited for each other, and no amount of shared adversity or outrageous fortune is going to save them. The fun comes in seeing how long it will be before Nat and Josh also realise they can’t stand each other, and throw in the towel. None of which sounds like much fun to watch, but the film passes by amiably enough, with a couple of decent laughs, and in Anna Faris, at least one likeable presence on screen. More here
It’s the old “leaving the loo lid up” stuff that really irks ’em.
At the centre of this unconventional “romance” is Rafe Spall and Rose Byrne. Rafe Spall excels in the role and makes his character Josh loveable, charming, and goofy at the same time. In comparison Rose Byrne’s character Nat is annoying and has seemingly no redeeming features whatsoever. The audience get the sense from the beginning that these two are in for a rough ride, with Nat being annoyed at Josh for not emptying the bin, leaving the loo lid up, not working and so on. All of these issues make her character appear trivial and even in the film’s resolution it’s difficult to warm to her at all. More here
