Tom Chaplin is one hell of a singer.

Keane’s “Strangeland” tour-stopped in KC this past Sunday and, in case you didn’t know, KC loves this band. The line of Keane fans were wrapped around The Midland waiting for the doors to open. Once inside, the fans packed the Midland full. Keane is a four member band from East Sussex led by Tom Chaplin on vocals. For me, this band could have been called The Tom Chaplin show and it would have made perfect sense. Few singers have the vocal tone, strength, depth and endurance that you get from Tom Chaplin. I certainly wouldn’t want to undermine the talent of the band that backs him, but the song structures and absence of instrumental solos contribute to the focus on Chaplin’s voice. Granted, the focus is deserved. Chaplin is a showman who sings his songs with conviction, but the band shares his conviction. At one point, I thought “this would be a great end of the day song to calm my nerves,” however, the band was throwing down and rocking out. It struck me as a little comical, but I guess music moves different people in different ways. The 20 and 30 something crowd that showed up for Keane was clearly moved by this band. I suspect they were all driving home talking about how Chaplin’s amazing vocals were spot on for the entire hour and a half long set. I guess us post-teens are just suckers for a great vocalist. Also, at one point, I am pretty sure I heard Chaplin say that they got into KC the night before the show and hit a local bar to check out the local music scene. How many big acts do that? Very cool. Keane sure has some dedicated fans.

When it was time for Keane’s set to begin, I could feel the anticipation in the air. This is definitely the kind of band that has a dedicated following, and after a week or more spent getting to know their newest album, Strangeland, I understand why. Albums like this are truly rare, as almost every fave record has at least one song we skip. This one, not so much. The band took to the stage with, well…I’d say “very little fanfare,” but I don’t mean that they didn’t receive any applause. What I mean is, they’re exceptionally humble and don’t come out to a big, splashy introduction. They merely walk on stage and get right down to business. “You Are Young” came first, and I must admit, I smiled at Tom’s accent when I heard him sing “baaaahhhhhsk” (bask), mostly because so many English bands don’t really sing with an accent. Right away it was apparent that the crowd loves this band: they were singing and clapping along in all the right places, something I really appreciate in a show, especially when I’m new to the group. “How’s everybody in San Fran tonight, alright?” Tom asked the crowd. “So good to see you!” More
