Top of the World or Top of Punch Drunk Feel Good Anthems ?
punch-drunk, feel-good dub and dancehall anthems, is nothing unlike what you’ve come to expect from the band, but rather a casual rehashing of what has long become the Long Beach band’s airtight formula of slow, slinking ska rhythms and chilled-out, easy living posturing. It’s a tired retread, and at a hefty 21 tracks, it’s an unfortunately laborious listen.
Boasting a healthy number of guest appearances from the likes of Fishbone’s Angelo Moore, Chali 2na, G. Love, and reggae great Barrington Levy, the band does its best to window-dress the music’s derivativeness. But while there are some proud moments, the record leaves a bland aftertaste that’s hard to rinse out. The record’s title track kicks things off with a pleasant slab of bass-heavy, dub-infused hip pop, while frontman Miles Doughty spits what could essentially pass for the record’s mission statement (“Ain’t no need for changing/ Or rearranging/ The life we have endured”). Sounds Like that was great Concert in Eugene, Or
arrived on stage to a packed crowd that finally filled out the venue, an interesting mix of all ages, plenty of tattoos, dreads, flannel shirts and backward trucker hats.
Lead singers Kyle McDonald and Miles Doughty started the set with an improv jam session, heavy on whammy guitar pedals and bongo drums. Both McDonald and Doughty switched instruments during their time on stage and didn’t lose one step in tempo or style of play. Each could play slide guitar and heavy bass without a hitch and the crowd loved it. More Here
This guy his way too hipster to get it
The band eases us into this opus of an album with something familiar and reassuring. The 1st track, which shares the name of the record (Click to listen to “Top of the World” on Earbits), is a groove-heavy, reggae influenced rock song with the band’s patented laid back southern California feel; guitars and horns providing the perfect counter melodies. After taking us even closer to the beach with the reggae/dub song, “Don’t Stop“, Slightly Stoopid brings a bit of the funk with the 3rd track, “Devil’s Door“. The track (3:19) reminds us that a jam band can make pop music… and make it very well. More Here
