The Numbers Station, starring John Cusak and that chick from The Proposal and a bunch of other movies you’ve seen (Malin Akerman), focuses on one of the Cold War’s most fascinating products: numbers stations. Numbers stations are unregistered radio transmissions that broadcast simple, mechanically voiced strings of numbers. They were (are) thought to be used by governments to communicate with their spies by using random strings of numbers, deciphered and decoded by one-time encryption pads that gave the spies their directives.
