Coheed and Cambria Reviews
Following the release of Good Apollo 1, several incidents within the band brought forth disagreements andhardfeelings. The band released a live concert, entitled “The Last Supper: Live at the Hammerstein Ballroom,”shortly beforebassist MicTodd and drummer Josh Eppard were removed from the band to deal with severe drugaddictions. The DVD was toservealmost as a farewell to the two members, a sort of “Goodbye, this is what youare leaving, this is how we wish toberemembered” statement. Months later, however, Todd rejoined the band(having been temporarily replaced for live showsbyMatt Williams). Eppard was replaced by Chris Pennie of TheDillinger Escape Plan.
The Afterman: Ascension Review
In five albums, Coheed and Cambria have unveiled The Amory Wars, a sci-fi/prog-rock epic following a hero’s harrowing intergalactic struggle to unearth the truth surrounding his parents’ death and overthrow an evil tyrant. Until now, the story has featured dense lyrics crafted by a nerdy F. Scott Fitzgerald, characters with the black-and-white morals and grace of a geek-friendly Harper Lee, and grand, intricate story arcs that would make regular George R. R. Martin giddy. But for album six, The Afterman: Ascension (the first of a double album), the band eschews aliens and spaceships for the most bizarre construct of all: genuine emotions.
Figerprints Concert
On Friday night, I was flipping through the television and waiting for my ride to the Coheed and Cambria show at Fingerprints. “The Song Remains the Same,” the legendary film of Led Zeppelin’s show at Madison Square Garden, was on VH1Classic. It was almost serendipitous, because it was clear that Coheed and Cambria shared some similarities with the legendary band — screeching vocals, epic guitar solos and strange mystic symbolism.
2012 Concert
After an eerie opening reminiscent of introductions and interludes past (see: The Ring in Return, Keeping the Blade, etc.), Ascension kicks off into the lead single, “Key Entity Extraction I: Domino the Destitute.” Powerful and epic, “Domino” instills that feeling often felt when listening to the band for the first time. Drummer Joshua Eppard is a welcome return, as his recognizable sound drives one of the band’s biggest epics in years. In fact, I credit this left-handed open percussionist for a great deal of the album’s appeal.
