Review of a The Bright Light Social Hour Concert

Oct 16 2012 – Sometimes you get very lucky and run into an indie band that rocks your soul so much that you want to get to the top of a mountain and decree to the masses that they must check out said band. Well let me get on my virtual mountain and scream at the top of my lungs – The Bright Social Hour must be seen live (before they are headliners at the festival circuit). The four guys from Austin are phenomenally good, with a sound that captures the nostalgia and distortion jams of the 70’s unlike any modern band (on par with the Sheepdogs). The band won six awards at the SXSW 2011 Austin Music Awards, including Band of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year.

The Bright Light Social Hour (TBLSH from now on) were in Toronto a few months ago, and actually played a free gig at Yonge and Dundas Square (an open square in the heart of downtown with a stage). We reviewed that gig and recommend checking it out here as we have videos and a full editorial.

As interesting as an open air concert might be, this band deserves to be seen in a hot sticky bar where the sound and lights are adequate but not quite perfect. Or another cool option would be to see them in a TV studio used to record concerts for TV shows for 34 years. Enter the AMD Digital Session @ Austin City Limits. AMD who is a big sponsor of ACL was holding a semi-private concert the night before the Austin City Limits Festival kicked off and the headliner was TBLSH! The venue is Studio 6A in the Communications Building B on the University of Texas at Austin campus, which is where the legendary Austin City Limits TV show has been shown weekly on PBS since 1976. Perfect sound and lights that only a TV studio can provide was the setting.

TBLSH is Curt Roush on guitar and vocals, Jack O’Brien on bass and vocals, drummer Joseph Mirasole and keyboardist A.J. Vincent. The band really delivered an inspired performance for the semi-corporate crowd, but everyone in attendance appreciated the music. Although not a typical rowdy rock crowd there is no doubt that everyone was mesmerized and got into the groove. The good news is that TBLSH will be back in Toronto on October 24th with Umphrey’s McGee at the Danforth Music Hall. This comes as a highly recommended show and we urge you to check out both bands. You can follow The Bright Light Social Hour on Twitter at @tblsh.
